from Sleepless Night

     I know that I should occupy my mind
and my desires only with earthly things;
but you are mightier than all desire,
heaven, that suddenly ravishes my soul.

     All the springs of life
together will never satisfy
this burning thirst; my lips forever will
be bitter, and vigilant my hope,

     though always disappointed. O funereal
and basalt sky, vainly my mind
assaults you; vainly it rebels
on earth; vainly it seeks refuge on the heights.
